Establishing a Small Scale Apiary
Whether it contains two beehives or twenty, an apiary can be a pleasurable, productive and profitable addition to any backyard or homestead. For the past twenty years, beekeepers of all levels of experience have encountered beehive die-offs of 30% to 40% every year. It is commonly reported that 80% of beginning beekeepers give up within the first two years because of the difficulty of keeping honey bees alive these days. In this Level II beekeeping course, you will learn from our beekeepers proven methods for establishing and sustainably managing your own apiary. They will recommend methods, born out of their own failures and successes, that they use to keep their beehives healthy and productive. In this day-long workshop, our beekeeping instructors will guide you through developing a plan for setting up your apiary and becoming a sustainable beekeeper. Weather permitting, topics discussed in the classroom will be illustrated with a hands-on inspection in the apiary.
Protective gear will be provided for beehive inspection. Please wear long sleeves and bring appropriate clothing for cold or inclement weather. No shorts or sandals, please.
This class is from 9 a.m – 5 p.m.
Prerequisite: Beekeeping Level I
