Knitting
Knitting
In the history of traditional crafts knitting has been around for a relatively short time (since the 17th century). However, it has continued to be a skill used to fashion functional and attractive items of clothing such as coats, socks, gloves, hats, and sweaters. In our mobile world, an added advantage of knitting is that you can take it wherever you go!
Our knitting classes are unique in that we take you, the beginning knitter, from the point where you may not know how to knit a stitch, through the process of mastering basic stitches, progressing step-by-step through the task of learning how to complete various garments using a standard knitting pattern or a simple formula to figure sweater proportions, as well as how to knit items such as scarves, blankets, socks, mittens, and hats, and to master the skill of incorporating color into your projects. As you become more proficient, you will be able to design a garment without a pattern, using any weight of yarn that you desire, and to fit the garment to any size (child, or adult), as well as to incorporate color patterns (such as Scandinavian and Fair Isle), texture (such as cable, Aran, slipstitch), and lace designs. This will free you to fashion garments and other items for yourself, your family, or friends without being constrained by the yarn requirements and sizes of a printed pattern. Our goal is to equip knitters to use their craft in as creative and useful ways as possible.
NOTE: For Knitting classes, please call Fiber Crafts at 254-300-2436 for availability.
For spinners who are able to spin their own yarn, the ability to design garments using any weight yarn means they can use the yarns they have spun without necessarily having to spin the yarn to a particular weight. This gives them a lot of flexibility in using their homespun yarn. Also, if they run out of yarn, they just spin some more! Homespun and hand-knitted items are unique. So, once you know how to knit, come and learn to spin!
